The Good-For-Something Drawings

I'm in the process of shooting and listing several works on paper from the past few months, the Good-For-Something drawings. I had very mixed feelings about these at the time I made them, but they've since grown on me and proven useful as a palette of ideas and fragments to be re-purposed and transformed in more recent work. They'll be available in my Etsy shop soon and make inexpensive gifts - perfect to add to a gallery wall.

On November 7th, several of my works will be in a show and auction hosted by Albany's Historical Foundation. I'm so excited to have all of my submitted pieces accepted and proud to be a part of the Foundation's preservation and awareness efforts in this beautiful 400 year old city. The following artworks will be up for auction on November 7th, so if you want them you'll have to bid at the New York State Museum!

Lingering Summer...

9/23/2015

I've just wrapped up two pieces begun this summer. Both of these followed a long stretch of frustrating works on paper, which in hindsight I can dub "The Good-for-Something Drawings."
Picture
Tether. 2015. Mixed media on canvas. 23" x 18 1/2." $275
Picture
Tahawus. 2015. Mixed media on linen, wood, and aluminum. 12 1/2" x 12 1/2" x 3." $175
In searching for names for these two, it became clear to me how much my July trip up Mt Marcy impacted my work. I find boulder-like forms creeping in and merging with the urban environment.

The title for Tether, at left, was pulled from my experience of the High Peaks - the sensation of being so small and surrounded by giants, and of sky on all sides with nothing to hold one to the ground.

Little House 3. Wood, Plexiglas, and Acrylic. 2" x 7" x 6."
Today I finally took photos of a series of sculptures I'd nearly forgotten about - a group of material and conceptual explorations made with small wood block houses. I'm quite fond of the little guys (none bigger than a few inches) and hope to make a few more to round out the series.

New business cards and a hand-made business card holder - yes I made it from scraps of a stretcher bar! I'm excited to find a place to show more work and display these little guys.

I'm in love with these summery blues and I can't stop them from taking over my palette. Thinking of cool water on these hot days...
Gouache is my new best friend and I'm making a series of small, airy pieces - I'll be posting some soon, and as always there is new work for sale in my shop!

Barndance

Storytime! I like to title my works, usually involving some part of the inspiration or my thought process...

Barndance (listed for sale currently on Etsy) shows a few faint figures, some planes of color, a few building fragments, and a large, rust-red barn. The figures actually weren't my doing; the zinc plate was one abandoned by a former student at the college many years ago, and rather than etch them away I left them as an under layer.

Anyways, back to "Barndance." I started the print with a palette drawn from memories of late summer afternoons. Once I put down the layer of yellow light over the barn, I was reminded of a childhood favorite book, "Barn Dance!" To this day my mother can recite to whole story, but I only remember the first few lines,

"Full moon shinin', shinin' big an' bright,
Pushin' back the shadows, holdin' back the night."
