Welcome to my blog, In The Works

Works in Progress 2/28/16

It has been a busy week - all of my different student groups are starting new lessons from Southwest Native American-inspired paper mache bowls to magnified single-object still life drawings. I'm excited to see how the new projects go, but it makes for scarce and precious studio time!

March's Studio newsletter will be out soon - sometime this week! Above is a sneak peek of the free desktop calendar download.

Today I had a chance to attend a one day "crash course" on Photoshop and Lightroom. It was helpful in so many ways and I think it has opened doors to some new ways for me to create while exploring the same processes and visual vocabulary of architecture. At left is my first experiment with this digital collaging; a little rough and unresolved but my head is full of more ideas than I know what to do with.

Taking advantage of the Presidents' Week school break to get some studio work done! I've been moving a few pieces along, shooting finished work to list in my Etsy store, and working on a soon-to-be-available email list!

Art Trip - Williams College and MASS MoCA

Lots of ideas rumbling around my head after today's trip to the Williams College Museum of Art and to MASS MoCA - such a great variety of quality work today.
Picture
My favorites from Williams were a 1912 painting by Robert Lee MacCameron and a pair of mask-like salvage/waste material sculptures by Romauld Hazoume.

At MASS MoCA, a massively-scaled photographic print on wood by Clifford Ross came in close second to the installations and work of Jim Shaw - loved the mix of ideas and the well-done large installations and paintings.

In Progress - Teacher Edition

I can't wait to get my Studio in Art students started on this stop motion lesson! Right now they are working on a reductive printmaking project inspired by their take on a nursery rhyme or fairy tale, so I think they'll make great connections between the narrative and storytelling involved in both, and they'll love seeing this in contemporary art and pop culture examples.

First week back has been a whirlwind of things both expected and unexpected...
Here are a few that got put on hold for a few days that I can't wait to get back to!

I've enjoyed having the last few days off and am happy to see some progress in my studio for the first time in months. With only one more day in 2015, my current dilemma is my desk - I love the idea of a clean, white surface, but have grown found of the layers of color left behind.

The Good-For-Something Drawings

I'm in the process of shooting and listing several works on paper from the past few months, the Good-For-Something drawings. I had very mixed feelings about these at the time I made them, but they've since grown on me and proven useful as a palette of ideas and fragments to be re-purposed and transformed in more recent work. They'll be available in my Etsy shop soon and make inexpensive gifts - perfect to add to a gallery wall.

On November 7th, several of my works will be in a show and auction hosted by Albany's Historical Foundation. I'm so excited to have all of my submitted pieces accepted and proud to be a part of the Foundation's preservation and awareness efforts in this beautiful 400 year old city. The following artworks will be up for auction on November 7th, so if you want them you'll have to bid at the New York State Museum!
